Ralambo Emile(1879 – 1963) : le contexte colonial et la représentation d’une société rêvée.

ANDRIANETRAZAFY Hemerson

257 An outstanding personality in the world of Malagasy painting, RALAMBO Emile (1979-1963) was in the heart of the constraints and new opportunities that characterized colonial society. He grew up in the context of the formation of the Anglo-Malagasy elite at the end of the 19th century. His beginning faced the tumultuous period of colonization and the francization of Institutions. Through the amalgam of Malagasy-English and French cultures, he tried to find his path to establish local identity despite the pressure of the colonial system. With his traveling companions, James Rainimaharosoa as well as his brothers Rakotovao Alphonse, Rasamoely Albert and Razafintseheno Joseph, he embarked on a quest for identity ; projecting himself into the ideal of a dreamed society, of a desired visual, of a world that he wanted to singularize in an approach that would come very close to the “liberation in the imagination” mentioned, in another register, by G. Althabe. His painting thus traced a unique line both in terms of themes and style to establish the framework of what would later be perceived as characteristic referents of Malagasy pictorial identity.
