161 The construction industry has a key place in the Malagasy economy. However, activities in this field have important negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, it seems essential to draw the attention of construction project designers to this subject. The goal of the article is to purpose the main axes on which the actors (contractors, architects, engineers,) should focus to integrate the pillars of Sustainable Development in the construction industry in Madagascar. After a detailed analysis of the context on an international and national scale, several possible action levers emerge: resource management, profitability, design for people and the environment. Sustainable construction practices could be applied upstream, according to characteristics of the project concerned. The foundations laid out in this article provide the platform for the development of the concept of sustainability in the selection of building materials.
