131 In Madagascar, climate related risks are real threats to the agricultural sector, a key sector in food security and economic development. The present study aimed to identify and evaluate actual and expected climate related risks on rural households’ livelihoods and food security across 10 Fokontany of two rural municipalities (Belobaka, Boanamary) in the district of Mahajanga II, in the Boeny region. Participatory-based research method used involved a survey conducted among 221 people, 76% were female coupled with focus groups, through an interview guide inspired by the CriSTAL tool. Survey findings showed that recurrent droughts are the major climate related risk negatively impacting households’ livelihoods mainly based on climate-sensitive activities including crop-productions, livestock-raising and fishing and affecting food security components. Among direct and indirect impacts of droughts were severe crop, livestock production and income losses, depletion and degradation of productive resources and steep prices increase of food commodities. Over all endogenous strategic adaptation alternatives, diversification of activities and income sources and adoption of climate-smart agricultural technologies and practices are key resilient factors.
